The Secret Life of a Poet: The Palm Tree Empire

What Does a Poet Have to do With a Palm Tree Garden?

William Stanley (W.S.) Merwin was born in New York in 1927. He spent early years in New Jersey & Scranton Pennsylvania (BTW, birthplace of Joe Biden, American President, & me: Ann Karen 😏.) His father was a Presbyterian minister, which prompted him to begin writing hymns at 5 years old. He also took an early interest in nature.

He published a poetry book at age 25, his first of almost 36 more. He was a prolific writer, and had an unusual poetic style. Taking up residence in several countries including Spain, England & France, he moved to Hawaii at age 49.

During his life he received many honors including two Pulitzer Prizes & was named U.S. Poet Laureate in 2010. He was well versed in speaking & writing French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese & more.

His poems have been described as having weighty subject matter. Yet written so that almost anyone can appreciate their meaning.

So What About the Palm Tree Garden?

With WS Merwin's move to Hawaii, he discovered three sorry acres on Maui. It had been a pineapple plantation which used chemicals for pest treatment. No trees at all. Lacking any native flora.

He purchased it at a bargain price. He told PBS "I thought it would be sort of fun to see what you could do with a piece of land like this."

And What He Did!

With his wife, they improved the soil and began planting Palms Native to Hawaii.

The couple then traveled the palm tropics & subtropics, and places Where Palms Grow, obtaining seeds. And continued planting. They also added other tropical foliage, compatible with palms. Eventually ending up with more than 2700 palms, almost 400 species. In 2010 he founded the Merwyn Conservancy.

Four years later he enlisted other organizations to help enumerate exactly what was growing in that palm tree garden. They inventoried over 3000 palms. Later that year he donated the land to the Hawaii Land Trust to protect it always. Plus helping to save many endangered palm species.

Today's Palm Tree Garden Forest

Today his Palm Tree Garden, the Merwin Conservancy, can be visited, but only at certain times. They post Upcoming Visit Times, these Guided Walks in W.S. Merwin’s Garden. Which are more akin to a hike! But so worth it.

Merwin stated to PBS:

"The marvelous thing about a garden... is that between... this morning and right now, look at the difference.

"The light changes, the wind changes, the time of day changes, and the whole thing is different. It's moving all the time. It's not static. If it makes you uneasy to be in a place that's changing like that, then that tells you something about yourself."

Finalizing With His Palm Tree Garden Words

W.S. Merwin didn't follow in his father's religious footsteps. While in Hawaii he became a Buddhist.

From his 1983 poem called Palm:

it knows how to be a palm
when it was a seed it knew
how to be a palm seed
when it was a flower
it knew how to be
the flower of a palm

Another he wrote, reads like a tribute, Called "The Palm." He died in his sleep in Hawaii amidst his beloved Palm Tree Garden in 2019 at age 91.
